Made in China: Return of the Soul

Made in China: Return of the Soul is a 90 minute dance-theatre adaptation and revisioning of Tang Xianzu’s Peony Pavilion, one of the most famous plays of classical Chinese literature and drama. It tells the haunting story of Du Liniang, the 16 year old daughter of a prominent official, who falls in love in a dream with a young scholar named Liu Mengmai.

Jin Xing’s production re-situates the play between the ancient Ming Dynasty era of 16th Century China and the modern chaos of contemporary 21st Century China. The media design incorporates large-scale projections that amplify different historical and contemporary sites in the play: the dreamworld of the garden is juxtaposed to the urban hell and mayhem of contemporary China.
