Technology

In the Western consciousness, techne, the Greek word that lies at the root of the term technology, does not imply machines running out of control and eclipsing human nature. Philosopher and musician David Rothenberg describes technology as that which extends human action out into the world. Technology establishes sets of connections between skill (techne) and order (logos). But forces beyond us are always thwarting this attempt at extension. Citing the writings of the pre Socratic philosopher Heraclitus, Rothenberg argues that we can never really grasp the logos, the order of a world in constant flux and impermanence – in this “account of a world which holds forever, men prove uncomprehending, both before hearing it and after they have heard.” In other words, there is a tension between us as humans wanting to order a world that always and continuously eludes us, slipping from our comprehension and control.
